When is stamping the right process instead of laser cutting?
Stamping wins on volume; laser cutting wins on flexibility. A stamped part carries a tooling cost up front and then produces at a few seconds per piece, so the crossover point is usually a few thousand pieces per year depending on part complexity. Laser cutting has no tooling cost and can absorb a design change overnight, which makes it the better route for prototypes, low volume, and parts that are still moving. Stamping also produces features that lasers cannot: forms, embosses, louvers, countersinks and drawn shapes are made in the die rather than as secondary operations. YBT runs 15 presses, 25 to 160 t mechanical and 265 t hydraulic, and makes its own dies with two in-house toolmakers, which shortens the loop when a first-article inspection shows a dimension needs correcting.
