Sheet Metal Bending

CNC press brake forming on seven TRUMPF and SafanDarley machines, for enclosures, covers and formed panels up to 2.5 m long.

What determines whether a bend can be formed as drawn?

Three constraints decide whether a bend on a drawing can actually be produced. The first is bend radius against material thickness: too tight a radius on the wrong grade cracks the outer surface, and stainless is less forgiving than mild steel. The second is flange length against the tooling: a flange shorter than roughly the die opening cannot be supported, so it either deforms or cannot be gripped. The third is bend sequence, because each bend removes access for the next one, and a part that is theoretically formable can still be impossible to produce in a workable order. YBT reviews these three points as part of quotation rather than after the first article, and returns the specific change needed when a feature will not form as drawn.

What are the sheet metal bending specifications?

Check the figures below against your drawing before you send it. If the number you need is not listed, ask us directly.

Questions you may have

Will you tell us if a bend will not form?
Yes. Bend radius, flange length and bend sequence are checked at quotation, and the specific change needed is returned with the quote rather than after the first article.
What is your minimum flange length?
It depends on material, thickness and the die opening used, so it is confirmed against your drawing at quotation. If a flange is too short to form on the tooling held, the specific change needed is returned with the quote.
Can you bend after surface treatment?
Forming is done before finishing. Where the finish on the bend line matters, the part is bent first and then polished, powder coated, painted or plated, so the coating is not cracked at the radius.
Do you provide flat pattern development?
Yes. Send a STEP model and the flat pattern is developed at YBT for the tooling and material used. A dimensioned 2D drawing alongside the 3D file is the fastest combination to quote.
